Ways To Give

Tax-Smart Giving

Give stock, DAF, IRA, or crypto gifts, simply and tax-smart.

However you give, you're investing in Ethiopian-led change that helps children learn and women earn. Many donors find they can give more, at a lower cost to them.

Which gift fits you?

You have a donor-advised fundGive from my DAF
You own stock that has grown in valueGive stock
You're 70½ or older with an IRAGive from my IRA
You hold cryptocurrencyGive crypto
You're planning a gift in your willSee planned giving
Giving in 2026? Two things to know.
If you're considering a gift of stock, a donor-advised fund grant, or a gift from your IRA, we encourage you to speak with your financial or tax adviser about your options.

Give early for year-end. Stock transfers take several business days, and IRA custodians get busy in December. For a gift that counts in 2026, we recommend starting by December 15.

Gifts from a Donor-Advised Fund

Your donor-advised fund is already set aside for giving. A grant to Roots Ethiopia puts it to work in rural Ethiopia, where Ethiopian-led teams help children learn and women earn. There are no fees to you.

Make your stock gift right here without leaving this page.

Prefer to recommend your grant through your DAF sponsor? Here's how.

Why give from your DAF?

Questions about DAF gifts

Will I get a tax receipt from Roots Ethiopia?

Your DAF sponsor gave you a tax receipt when you put money into your fund. We will send you a personal thank-you so you know your grant arrived.

Will you know the grant came from me?

Only if you choose to share your name when you recommend the grant. Please do, or let us know it is on the way, so we can thank you.

Can I set up a recurring grant?

Yes, most sponsors offer monthly, quarterly, or yearly grants. Look for the recurring option when you recommend your grant.

Your sponsor or advisor may need our organization details. Grant on the way? Let us know.

Gifts of Stock and Securities

Stock that has grown in value can do more as a gift than as a sale. Give it directly and you avoid capital gains tax, while Ethiopian-led teams put those market gains to work so children learn and women earn. There are no fees to you.

Make your stock gift right here without leaving this page.

Prefer to know more before you give? Here's what to expect.

Why give stock?

✓  Avoid capital gains tax on stock held more than a year

✓  Deduct the full market value if you itemize

✓  Give more at no extra cost to you

✓  Mutual funds and ETFs welcome too

How it works

  1. Click "Make a stock donation" above and fill out the short form
  2. You or your broker receive simple transfer instructions
  3. Your broker moves the shares, usually within a few business days
  4. We sell the shares right away and put the funds to work in Ethiopia
  5. You get a tax receipt from DonateStock and a thank-you from us
See the difference. Say you bought shares for $2,000 that are now worth $5,000. Sell them first, and you would owe tax on the $3,000 gain. Give them directly, and the full $5,000 goes to work for Ethiopian-led schools and women's businesses.

See your own tax savings

This free calculator from DonateStock, our stock-giving partner, shows how much you could save by giving stock instead of selling it: the capital gains tax you avoid, your charitable deduction, and your total savings. Just enter a ticker symbol and it fills in today's price. It opens in a new window, so you won't lose your place here.

Questions about stock gifts

Will I get a tax receipt?

Yes. DonateStock sends your charitable receipt once your gift is processed.

Can I transfer by DTC from my brokerage?

Yes. Most gifts arrive by DTC transfer. You will get specific instructions when you use the "Make a stock donation" button, and advisors can request them with the link under the button.

What information will I need?

Your name, email, the stock name or ticker, the approximate number of shares, and your broker's name.

What if I've owned the stock less than a year?

You can still give it, but your deduction is usually limited to what you paid. Shares you have held longer typically bring a bigger tax benefit. Your advisor can help you choose.

Gifts from Your IRA

If you're 70½ or older, a gift straight from your IRA, called a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), is one of the most tax-smart ways to give. It helps children learn and women earn in rural Ethiopia, and it works whether or not you itemize.

One call or one form with your IRA custodian. No fees to you.

Why give from your IRA?

✓  The gift is not counted as taxable income

✓  At 73 or older, it can count toward your required minimum distribution

✓  You benefit even if you take the standard deduction

✓  No fees to you

How to make your IRA gift

  1. Ask your IRA custodian for a Qualified Charitable Distribution to Roots Ethiopia Inc
  2. Give them our organization details exactly as shown
  3. Ask them to include your name and address with the gift
  4. The funds must go directly from your IRA to us. If they are paid to you first, the gift does not qualify
  5. Let us know your gift is on the way

Questions about IRA gifts

Do I need to be a certain age?

Yes. QCDs are available to IRA owners 70½ or older. The IRS sets a yearly limit that adjusts over time. Your custodian or advisor can confirm the current amount.

Will this count toward my required minimum distribution?

If you are 73 or older and have an RMD this year, yes, your QCD can count toward it. Ask your custodian to confirm how it applies to you.

Do I get a tax deduction too?

No separate deduction. Instead, the gift is left out of your taxable income, which for many donors is worth more than a deduction.

Can I give from my 401(k) or 403(b)?

QCDs come only from IRAs. Some donors move funds into an IRA first. Talk with your advisor about what works for you.

Gifts of Cryptocurrency

Crypto that has grown in value works like stock as a gift. Give it directly and you can avoid capital gains tax, while Ethiopian-led teams put the full value to work so children learn and women earn. There are no fees to you.

Make your crypto gift right here without leaving this page.

Why give crypto?

✓  Avoid capital gains tax on crypto held more than a year

✓  Deduct the fair market value if you itemize

✓  Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other common coins accepted

✓  Your gift becomes dollars for the work right away

How it works

  1. Click "Donate crypto" above and enter your gift details
  2. Connect your wallet and choose the coin and amount
  3. DonateStock converts your gift to dollars and sends it to us
  4. You get a tax receipt from DonateStock and a thank-you from us

Questions about crypto gifts

Will I get a tax receipt?

Yes. DonateStock emails your receipt with the date and amount of your gift.

Is there anything special for larger gifts?

Yes. For crypto gifts over $5,000, the IRS generally requires a qualified appraisal to claim your deduction. Your tax advisor can help you plan for this.

Does Roots Ethiopia hold crypto?

No. Your gift is converted to dollars right away, so the full value goes to work in Ethiopia.
